Eddie Alvarez is waiting patiently to find out who the winner of the upcoming lightweight championship superfight between Brazilian titleholder Rafael dos Anjos and 145-pound king Conor McGregor is at the UFC 196 pay-per-view (PPV) on March 5, 2016.
The former Bellator 155-pound champion and No. 1-ranked UFC lightweight contender is even doling out advice for “RDA” as he prepares to face “Notorious.” Alvarez is in purgatory because McGregor may take aim at the 170-pound title held by Robbie Lawler if he is victorious, and the future meeting between streaking brutes Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC on FOX 19 in April.
However, Alvarez isn’t shy about revealing his own plans — as he did to the Inside MMA crew — and they involve dos Anjos, not McGregor.
“I would want McGregor because it’s more money and a simpler fight. He’s the easy guy and more money. Dos Anjos is a bigger challenge. To me, he’s the better fighter. In a perfect world, I’m fighting dos Anjos in June, or July, for the world title.”
That would seriously put a dent in this recent declaration by the SBG Ireland product.
If dos Anjos sticks to his guns — meaning his overwhelming grappling game — it should be a short night for McGregor, according to Alvarez. The Rafael Cordeiro-trained fighter is prepared to dish out the hurt when the two collide inside MGM Grand in Las Vegas, as is McGregor.
The title-hungry Irishman is indeed the money fight, so it would serve Alvarez right to be rooting for McGregor, but alas that’s not the case. The Philadelphia native is content with seeing how things play out in “Sin City” in two weeks and then he’ll go from there.
However, staying active is of the utmost importance to Alvarez.
“I’m looking for an opponent immediately,” Alvarez said.
