Justin Gaethje doesn’t think former Bellator champ Brooks will land big money contract he’s hoping for

WSOF lightweight champ Justin Gaethje said former Bellator champ Will Brooks has been chirping about a fight on social media for a long time.

With Brooks’ (17-1) recent Bellator release and all the likely unrealistic talk of a cross-promotional bout in the background, Gaethje (16-0) told MMAjunkie Radio he’s all for making the fight a reality.

In addition, Gaethje said he believes Brooks would be well served to lower his expectations on the free agent market. After all, Brooks has only finished two opponents in his ten most recent fights. Something a marquee promotion like the UFC may find undesirable.

“He’s always been talking this type of crap about doing cross-promotion with Bellator and World Series when he knew damn well that was never going to work out,” Gaethje said. “I never even acknowledged it when he said it then. When he started saying it, I never wanted it then. … I don’t think he’ll get a lot of money. I’m sure he thinks he’s going to get top dollar from a promotion, but I don’t think – just being honest, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.”

The well of opponents to challenge Gaethje has been running dry recently.

Only two men have managed to make it to the scorecards with the undefeated 27-year-old and, at times, it feels the biggest question is the manner in which he’ll score his stoppage over the next man to challenge for the belt.

That makes a bout with Brooks, who is on an eight-fight winning streak and never lost the Bellator title in the cage, appealing to not only fans, but to Gaethje.

“I have no idea,” Gaethje said. “I hope (the fight happens). I’ve been putting out enough hints out there. I don’t think it’s smart for any company to sign someone to a one-fight deal. It would be something that wouldn’t be normal, but there’s only one way to grow as a promotion and that’s to do things that aren’t normal. I think it would be huge for me, for Will and for World Series of Fighting. I think it would be the biggest fight they could put on right now.”
